Book Review #1: Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler

As the name says, this book is about break up, a book that shows that in love/in a relationship (especially in a teenage relationship) you have to respect your partner, by understanding your partner by slowing things down.

the blurb:

This is the box, Ed.

Inside is everything,

Two bottle caps, a movie ticket from Greta in the Wild, a note from you, a box matches, your protractor, Joan’s book, the stolen sugar, a toy truck, those ugly earrings, a comb from the motel, and the rest of it.

This is it, Ed.

The whole story of why we broke up.

Let’s me now discuss first the book cover. “Why We Broke Up“‘s book cover is one of the best book covers alive. It contains this lovely, teenage vibe, that will actually make you want to read the book. However the book is so heavy if it’s hardbound, since the paper’s different and the book is full with different photos illustrated by Maira Kalman.

Let’s now move on with the story, the story is about this girl, Min, who wrote a long letter together with the box full of things that she treasured from her past relationship with Ed. Their relationship went by so fast, and of course she regretted it at the end of the story(it’s a spoiler I know), yes that’s the whole point of the story. The transitions and the connections of the things were not that smooth, but everything’s symbolic and well written.

In connection to real life, I may say that this book really taught me to understand this before venturing myself with a relationship, may it be with a new friend or some people that I know will be a part of my favorite people on Earth, in short trust must not be given right away. This book also let me understand more about slowing things down and not let myself move on with the fast track of life, and finally this book also taught me that in life we have to know how to keep the things that must be kept and to give back the things that we must let go. Also I may say that this may not be the best book at first, but this novel is full of symbolical things that will give you lessons in life, and it’s not only for a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, it’s also for a kind of friendship that must be kept, respected and cherished.

"I want to be a director, but you could never truly see the movies in my head and that, Ed, is why we broke up."

PS: This is my first book review and forgive me that I’m not that good with this.

Fangirling became my week starter last Sunday, March 3, 2013, and I never actually know how to react that time, the time when I will meet the author of my favorite book. Well let me start first with this…

It’s my first time to go to a book signing event, (well before I was supposed to go to Nicholas Sparks’ book signing event, but due to. okay I’ll stop from there, because that doesn’t make any sense here.) and I’m so glad that this is my first! Then I may also say that I also became a wallflower that day, I mean I’m just listening to a lot of conversations of different bookworms and nerdfighters, and that time I realized that being a wallflower is actually cool. You’ll get to learn a lot of things, and at the same time study different types of personality.image

Now moving on to the event, after waiting for how many hours! There came one of my favorite authors, Ransom Riggs(writer of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children)! He read a part of his book, and I really found it great to hear the author of the book reading his own book aloud.image

Then now the question and answer part came/interrogating part according to Ransom, and I’m glad that I’m one of the lucky fans who got to ask him.imageMy first question is if he’s going back to making YouTube videos, and he said yes maybe some time. And my last question is who’s his favorite author, and he said Cormac McCarthy(writer of The Road) is his favorite because of the language he uses.

For the last part the book signing event came, and I’m still the 135th person, so I have to wait for quite a long time/2 hours I guess. However I may consider myself lucky, because when my turn came Tahereh Mafi(writer of Shatter Me) arrived, I know I haven’t read any of her books yet, but that starstruck feels came to me, because 2 great authors are now in front of me!imageNow for my real turn, I gave Ransom a letter written on a receipt, that he accepted and made him laugh. lol. Well we chatted a little, and I hugged him after, and here are our photos together.imageimageThe signed copy of my book!!! *fangirling screams here*image

Yes right now I’ll be ending my week with happiness, and I still can’t believe that I actually talked to that person who wrote my favorite book, because Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a book of adventure, love, understanding and most especially hope. As of right now I’m really looking forward for the movie of it(DIRECTED BY TIM BURTON) and the sequel of this book. And again thank you Mr. Ransom Riggs, for being a hilarious, down to earth and really approachable man! To Fully Booked, bring him again to Philippines next time! I have to give a lot of photos to him too! Now, to everyone I hope you’ll get to read this awesome book, it’s really great(but prepare for nightmares, because I had one).

"I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was." -Jacob Portman

Well I’m just so happy today, all because I already bought the new book of Nicholas Sparks. Another thing that book is hardbound and only 549php, while in Fully Booked it’s 1000+php I think.

Then for that manila paper there I can say that it’s really hard to make a report, but thank God I’m done na with my report and I also reported already and gave a quiz for my classmates and they actually hated my quiz!

A NEW BOOK AGAIN! I love you Nicholas Sparks! I hope it will be released here in Philippines soon! I’m so excited to buy this book and it’s entitled “Safe Haven”. Sorry I’m really really addicted to his novels since 2008!

You’re going to come across people in your life who say all the right words at all the right times. But in the end, it’s always their actions you should judge them by. It’s actions, not words, that matter.
